I once ran a half marathon in Reykjavík, Iceland, wearing all brand new clothes since the airline “temporarily” lost our luggage. I may or may not have listened to the band KISS for all 13.1 miles.

Experience

My not-for-profit clients are mission-driven. When I can assist them with their audit, tax, and business needs, they’re free to focus on their passion — whether it’s people, animals, the environment, giving back and assisting their communities, etc. — instead of worrying about accounting and finances. They appreciate that I recognize this.

As a former office managing partner and current team partner, I make a significant investment in my team members. They recognize me as someone who’s always willing to help them work through personal and professional challenges. I’ve worked with firm leadership to expand the firm’s recruiting efforts for Michigan State University (MSU) graduates. I’m happy when any of my staff achieve success in the firm — even if they aren’t MSU grads.

I was attracted to this career because of the variety. It’s been over 34 years, and I still appreciate that my workload isn’t entirely predictable: different clients, different responsibilities, and different days. It’s what keeps me coming back.

Professional accounting organizations and client boards often ask me to speak on NFP industry topics. I’m a member of the AICPA, the MICPA, and the ISCPA. I am an advisory board member of Baker College and Lawrence Technological University. I also serve on the board of the Skyline Club. I’m a public accounting advisor to the Accounting Practices Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
